Paperboy by Vince Vawter
Vince loves to throw baseballs, and he’s known as being one
of the best pitchers at his school. What he’s also know for is his stuttering.
Even though he works with a speech therapist, Vince has a hard time talking to
people, especially strangers. To make up for hitting his best friend Rat with a
baseball, Vince agrees to take over Rat’s paper route for the month Rat will be
away at his grandparents. In addition to making amends for injuring Rat, Vince
hopes to practice and improve his speech by forcing himself to talk to
strangers on the paper route. What Vince doesn’t realize is that he will make
new friends and new enemies during that one month as the paperboy. Set in the
segregated south, this is a great story of overcoming adversity.
