Operation Oleander by Valerie O. Patterson
While Jess’s dad is serving in Afghanistan, Jess wants
nothing more than to help in some way. Starting a drive to help orphans in a
village near where her father is stationed seems like the perfect way to help.
But while Operation Oleander is a success, that success comes with consequences
when a bomb is set off near the orphanage while the soldiers are delivering
aid. Jess is unprepared for the political fallout her simple desire to help
kids her age one the other side of the world has on her personal relationships
at home with her friends and family. Jess’s agony at the cost of her decisions
is made clear by the author’s portrayal of a girl who only wants to do
something to help others.
