Pop by Gordon Korman

New to the town, Marcus spends the summer before his junior year hanging out in the park, practicing football by himself. Enter Charlie, a goofy middle-aged man who seems to have nothing better to do than hang out in the park and teach Marcus, who he insists on calling “Mac,” how to really play the game. The mystery surrounding Charlie, and Marcus’s conflicts with his new teammates against the backdrop of football should hold the attention of the average sports fan and anyone who likes an easy read with a realistic storyline.
